Today Apple announced earnings and revenue generated during Q2 of the 2012 fiscal year. The results? Outstanding! To talk numbers, during the second fiscal quarter of 2011, Apple reported a revenue of $24.67 billion and a net profit of $5.99 billion (or $6.40 per diluted share). This year, Apple was proud to announce a quarterly profit of $39.2 billion and a net profit of $11.6 billion (or $12.30 per diluted share)!
Amazingly, the total revenue generated was accompanied by a substantial gross margin increase – 47.4 percent versus last year’s 41.4 percent. While Q1 of the 2012 fiscal year proved more lucrative for Apple, a total of $46.33 billion in sales and $13.06 billon was reported. Q2 easily surpassed respective quarters of all previous years.
Apple’s astounding success this quarter can mostly be attributed to their iPhone sales – it was predicted that the company would sell a total of 30.5 million units and that number was exceed by 4.6 million for a total of 35.1 million iPhones reportedly sold during Q2.
While Apple surpassed predictions for the number of iPhone units sold, the company fell short of estimated iPad and Mac sales. Analysts had predicted that Apple would sell somewhere between 12 to 13 million iPads and about 4.4 million Macs – in actuality, the company sold 11.8 million iPads and 4 million Mac units for the second quarter of this fiscal year. Although sales for this quarter didn’t match up with expectations, Apple is still up from 4.69 million iPads sold and 3.6 million Macs sold in Q2 of the 2011 fiscal year.

CUPERTINO, California—April 24, 2012—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 second quarter ended March 31, 2012. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $39.2 billion and quarterly net profit of $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $24.7 billion and net profit of $6.0 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 47.4 percent compared to 41.4 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 64 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
The Company sold 35.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, a 151 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4 million Macs during the quarter, a 7 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 7.7 million iPods, a 15 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
