Apple’s iPhone Captures More Than Half Of The US Smartphone Market
A research firm by the name Kantar Worldpanel published a new report, which suggests that Apple has continued to maintain iOS’ title as the best-selling smartphone platform in the United States during the fourth fiscal quarter of 2012. Kantar Worldpanel, the firm that releases continuous quarterly data monthly, notes that Apple has overthrown Android and reclaimed the lead for the August through October quarter.
When analyzing the year-over-year figures for the 2011 corresponding quarter, it’s immediately apparent that iOS’ market share has increased from 44.9 percent to 51.2 percent, whereas Android sales have maintained a near-constant 44 percent.
‘Apple’s continual improvement is thanks to both the iPhone 5 and older models attracting various customer groups, from repeat Apple buyers, first time smartphone buyers and those coming from other smartphone brands,’ said Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato.
Also, Apple’s increased market share has come partially at the expense of Research in Motion (RIM) and other smaller platforms, as they’ve seen a rather substantial loss in sales.
Interestingly, the firm mentions that only 35 percent of Apple’s smartphone sales during that period were from existing users upgrading from a previous phone. Alternatively, 36 percent of sales came from customers who switched from a competing platform and 30 percent were customers upgrading to their first smartphone.
