Google Maps for iOS Downloaded Over 10 Million

According to a recent Google+ post from Jeff Huber, Google’s Senior Vice President of Geo and Commerce, the new Google Maps app for iOS has already turned into a smashing success. With over 10 million reported downloads between last Wednesday (when the app was released) and Friday, Google Maps has skyrocketed to claim number one on the App Store’s “Top Charts” for free apps.

We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.

Google Maps was highly anticipated and a much welcomed addition to the App Store, mostly due to the countless number of irate customers who have found themselves lost after attempting to use Apple’s new in-house mapping solution. Within the past few months, Tim Cook issued a public letter of apology and Apple has completely restructured their executives in charge of overseeing iOS development, which is largely due to criticism surrounding the pre-installed Apple Maps app.

With over 21,000 reviews, most of which are positive, Google Maps has managed to maintain an overall rating of roughly 4.5/5 stars – needless to say, Google Maps has been a suitable replacement for over 10 million users. Although that figure seems simply colossal, to put it in perspective, Apple announced over 100 million iDevices had upgraded to iOS 6 in September; the number has obviously grown since. At any rate, Google Maps can be downloaded for free via either iTunes or Apple’s App Store. Stay tuned for additional coverage on both Apple’s iOS 6+ Maps app and Google Maps.
