A new and improved version of Mac Defender Malware has been found – and just hours (less than a day) after a Mac OS X security update that supposedly protected against this exact virus!
The new variant of Mac Defender, which started popping up few hours ago, works and is distributed identically to previous versions of the malware: unsuspecting users are redirected to an illegitimate website that claims that their Mac is infected (yeah right, we all know thats a lie). From there, the malware disguises its self as an anti-malware tool (go figures) – the key difference is that this new version completely bypasses the Security Update that Apple released yesterday.
Now remember, you still cannot get this virus simply by visiting a site. You have to download the program, install it, put in your admin password when it asks for it and grant it access to your system. So if anything looks suspicious when install a program, DON’T put in your password – its better to be safe than sorry! The biggest question now is how long will it take Apple to update their security list, will more hackers jump on the Mac malware/virus bandwagon and if so, will Apple be able to keep OS X virus free (for the most part).
